Community Events: History and Artisans

October 3, 2014 - Updated: October 3, 2014

The Port Credit and Clarkson neighbourhoods are vibrant communities. And this weekend, there will be tons to do!

Go on a guided tour of the Benares Historic House, which has been restored to reflect daily life in 1918. Get an idea of life in the early 1900’s as you learn about the life and times of the four generations of the Harris and Sayers families that lived in the home – and who knows, you might just find that they had many things in common with the famous Crawley family from “Downton Abbey.”

After the tour, indulge in some warm scones and a pot of tea. Don’t forget to wear your best hat and gloves to the event and really get into the spirit of the early 1900’s.

If tea and scones aren’t for you, perhaps you’d like to shop for some fine crafts in Port Credit and Clarkson. This weekend, the Mississauga Artisan Studio Tour will be running for its 5th year straight! A perfect opportunity to treat yourself, add to your collection or purchase a special gift for a special occasion.

Take your friends or the family to tour through new studios, meet new artists and take in one of Southern Mississauga’s most unique experiences.

Community Events: A Little Bit of History with Every Step

September 30, 2014 - Updated: September 30, 2014

There's always something to do in Port Credit or nearby Clarkson, home to two of Mississauga's museums. With the glorious weather this weekend, we hope you were out and about! On Sunday, it was the World War I Experience Day at Benares Historic House (map).

Re-enactors from the History Matters Association and the Museums of Mississauga shared first-person stories to give visitors a hands-on experience using wartime reproductions. There was a little bit of history with every step throughout the property. Everyone who passed through the doors of the Benares House this weekend left with a real sense of everyday life on the home front and in the trenches.

It was a truly humbling experience and brought ample opportunity for education, entertainment and community interaction. And with necks craned upward, the day was topped off with a fly-over of replica WWI planes.

This wonderful event was supported by the Hazel McCallion Foundation of the Arts, Culture, Heritage and the Friends of the Museums of Mississauga.

Community News: Save a few bucks at the CNE

August 19, 2014
You know the end of summer is coming when the lights and sounds of the CNE come into full swing. While the CNE itself is reasonably priced, the rides, food and parking can have a family of four paying through the nose. Here are a few tips on how you can save a few bucks at the CNE.

Toonie Mondays: On Monday August 25th kids under 13 years old, accompanied by a paying adult, pay only a toonie for admission. If you’ve got children over 13, they can still take advantage of the savings by buying 30 ride tickets for only $22.

Youth Day: It’s not  just the little ones who are getting all the savings. On August 26th children 19 years old or younger get free admission into the CNE. The CNE is offering another ticket special on Youth Day too, 8 rides for $20!

Weekday Specials: Don’t feel like making dinner? Head on over to the CNE after 5pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday for $6 admission to the park. This is a great time for adults or youths because the crowds are much smaller during the week.

Kids Passes: Many of the schools throughout Mississauga offer free kids passes for their students. Find out if your school is one of them by going to their website.

Hopefully by taking advantage of one of these opportunities you and your family will get to spend a day at the Ex…for a lower price!

Real Estate News: Toronto Home Sales Jump in July

August 14, 2014
The Toronto Real Estate Board just posted the sales information for July, and sales are up again! A 10% jump in sales in sales represents the second best July sales record in history.
Detached houses saw the biggest jump in sales followed closely by condominiums. The jump is attributed to a switch from renting to owning in big segments of the populations. As we mentioned in our previous post, unmarried couples are starting to take-on mortgages before the big day.
However July is a red-hot month for another reason - vacation time. When you're thinking of moving, July is a great time to do it because you can take the vacation time to move into your new place. However now that fall is approaching, there are still many opportunities for people to buy, in a potentially less competitive market. With sales like this in July, things are sure to open up in August or September.

Community News: Preparing your kids for the School Year in Mississauga

August 6, 2014
August means one month till school starts, so parent's everywhere are starting to think about back to school shopping and activities. Here is a list of some upcoming events you parents may want to think about.
Receiving you Back to School Packages
Many schools in the region have started mailing out packages to parents with back to school information. If you child is in a new school, you may want to read over this information, especially the parent-student handbook. You may also need to submit copies of health cards or other medical information, so have that prepared.
Back to School Shopping
Many of the 'mommy-bloggers' agree that there are two ways to do back to school shopping: really early, or really late. If you're right in the middle, that's when you end up paying through the nose.

Early August is a great time to go through what your child already has including school supplies and clothing. Then you can hit the stores before the big end of August rush. If you find that your child has enough materials to get them through the first few weeks, then wait until the end of September to buy your back to school supplies and save a few bucks!
Finding a Tutor
Many parents realize their child needs a tutor too late, and finding a tutor right before high school exams or end of semester projects can be a nightmare. Instead, look up some organizations that offer tutors right away in September. This will also allow your child to get into a routine with their tutor, setting them up for long-term success.
After School Activities
We mentioned in our previous posts how Mississauga breeds world class athletes. But creating such successful programs means that early registration is key. Dance studios, basketball teams and hockey leagues have already started registering for the new year. Make sure to talk with your child about the activities they want to be involved in and sign up.
We hope these tips will be useful, and set everyone up for an enjoyable school year!

Real Estate News: Why should we be confident in the housing market?

July 31, 2014

The Globe and Mail reported last week that the "mood in Toronto's housing market is still buoyant," which could be the reason for the strong sales TREB reported in June (see our previous blog post Real Estate News: Sales up in June). In fact, perceptions related to the value of real estate in Canadian neighbourhoods are 10 percentage points above the six-year average.

The reason for this confidence is multifaceted. First, more listings are becoming available on the market. People don't feel the intense competition they once did, and can ease their way into a home search. Sellers are becoming more realistic with pricing, so overpriced homes don't sit on the market, making buyers more confident in their ability to buy a home. Similarly, people are spreading out their listings, trying to sell in the low times (such as July and August) to avoid increased competition in the peak months. Finally, low interest rates continue to make confident buyers.

For more information on confidence in the market, check out The Globe and Mail's article:

Real Estate News: Townhouses and Semis Another Suburban Option

July 29, 2014
Several factors in the city are affecting the way homes are built in the suburbs.
As prices continue to increase, professionals who have lived their whole lives in the city, are moving to the suburbs. But these city-savvy professionals are looking to buy city-style homes. This includes condominiums, semis and townhouses.
Condominiums, semis and townhouses offer smaller, manageable spaces, in the more laid-back suburbs. While you have access to beautiful green spaces, you're not responsible for maintaining them as you would be in a larger home. Another reason individuals are investing in these homes, is their reluctance to borrow. If you feel more comfortable putting down a larger down payment, despite the low interest rates, townhouses can be a more affordable option for home ownership. Finally there are a variety of beautiful condos, semis and townhouses available in Mississauga.

Real Estate News: Sales up in June

July 8, 2014 - Updated: July 8, 2014
The Toronto Real Estate Board announced on Friday that there was a "strong increase in residential sales" this June. Semi-detached houses saw the greatest increase in sales while condominiums sales remain stable. President of the Board, Paul Etherington predicts sales will be strong well into the summer.

Strong sales are attributed to confident buyers and affordability. As the economy strengthens, buyers are becoming more confident in their ability to afford a home. The banks are also  are offering excellent interest rates on mortgages. Owning a home is a profitable long term investment, especially in our growing and exciting community.

Beautiful Weather on Bethune Road

June 2, 2014 - Updated: June 2, 2014

We had a very busy weekend at our Open House on Bethune Rd! The weather was glorious and people were out in droves to look at homes for sale. The house and yard showed beautifully in the bright sunshine and we had a lot of great feedback on this home.  People unanimously loved the kitchen - it's so much bigger than the typical kitchen in that neighbourhood.  The bathrooms upstairs also got a lot of positive comments and very mom that came through the house loved the custom mudroom.

Stay tuned for more information about our listings, and events going on in the community!
